When I first started on covers for Batgirl with Bryan, his one request was to always have Steph smiling, even in uncertain times. Here’s our little Batgirl swinging off to her last issue. Thanks everyone for the support, I was only on for a few issues, but am proud to have been a part of Bryan’s team.

Yes I just discovered Dustin’s tumblr and went through all 47 pages, it was totally worth it. ANYWAY.

This is one of the reasons I love Steph so much and part of why I think Bryan Miller did such an excellent job. Before her run as Batgirl she had a lot of uncertainty despite her snark and more than enough misery, but her happy-go-lucky attitude doesn’t come off as random or forced, but rather learned. She really grew and became this shining ray of hope, and I adore her for it.

Also Dustin I love your work and I swear Lil’ Gotham is actually giving me cavities.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

For some reason, this “tight rough” for the second piece of press art we released didn’t make it into the Korra art book, but I like it so I’m posting it here. I based it off of a storyboard panel of Joaquim’s from the premiere episode, and he did some further revisions on top of my drawing, which are included here in what you might call a “jam.” I wouldn’t call it that. Without wincing.

Sorry again for the lack of posts! Our production schedule is simply brutal as we are working on Books 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously, and I have little time for anything else once I try to fit “being a human being” in there. Such is the nature of TV production and its protracted, overlapping schedules… Despite the absence and the delays (which are all symptomatic of The Difficulty of Making Animation and little or nothing else), I would (as I have in the past) humbly ask you for your continued patience: It is a good year to be a Korra fan, and a lot of great stuff is coming down the pipeline that we are excited to announce (when we are permitted to announce it) and to share with you all. When you compliment a random woman who doesn’t know you, no matter how nice you are about it, there’s a good chance she’s going to freak out internally because for all she knows, you could be that latter type. I get that it sucks that sometimes, expressing totally reasonable opinions like “hey you’re hot” will make women terrified of you or furious at you. That’s not fair.

Blame all the guys who may have harassed, abused, or assaulted her in the past.
